True Blue Decorative Artists was founded in Victoria, Australia in August 2004. We began as a group of fellow artists with the same vision of taking decorative art to all areas in the aim of widening its profile.

When True Blue was formed in August 2004 we also decided to apply to become a chapter of the SDP. By December 2004 we received notification that we would be accepted as a chapter of the SDP and that we could receive our affiliation certificate at the national conference in 2005. We didn’t have any member attending the 2005 conference but advised them that the Chairman, Vice Chairman and Secretary/Treasurer of True Blue were attending the 2006 conference in Nashville and as such we received our certificate at the affiliation ceremony. This made us only the second chapter of the SDP in Australia. As of 2010 we have ceased to be a SDP chapter.

True Blue membership though formed in Victoria has no boundaries and has members Australia-wide as well as New Zealand and USA. As a group of artists we love to travel to city, country, beachside, anywhere sharing the joy of decorative art. We have a group of travelling teachers dedicated to sharing their skills and projects by bringing the pleasure of decorative art to any area. Please contact us if you are interested in True Blue coming to your community.

A newsletter titled “The Palette” is sent to members quarterly. It includes pictures and details of upcoming events, free pattern, editorials and general information relating to our art. It is our way of communicating to members that cannot get to our meetings. Everybody’s opinion and input is important to us. If you have anything you would like to contribute to “The Palette” please send it to us. We are interested in any helpful hint, new technique, titbit, or art gossip but remember our policy is “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.”

As a non profit organisation we currently support Cerebal Palsy Education Centre (CPEC) by painting “Beanie Bear” poles and 2007 saw us donate a Christmas tree full of hand painted ornaments for the third year in a row. We also donate Christmas trees full of ornaments to other selected charities who may raffle or sell the ornaments helping their fundraising efforts. .

In 2008 a Decorative Art Scholarship is to be formalised thanks to the generosity of the families of the late Denise Kidd and Sharon Bacon (both pioneers in the decorative art field in Australia). This has been made possible by the generosity and support of a variety of artists who have donated artwork for us to raffle to help fund this scholarship. It is to be named The Making A Dream Come “True Blue” Scholarship and is valued at $500. It will be open to all members of good standing and may be used to further decorative painting goals, education, or increase your knowledge of decorative art through seminars, workshops or conferences.

Between 2005 and 2009 we have held a yearly conference in the Echuca-Moama region where 80-100 members Australia-wide attend. In 2010 we moved the conference to Tullamarine. We offered a weekend away for both serious and beginner painter’s alike, learning new techniques with the best teachers in Australia while enjoying good company, food, wine and laughter.

In 2007 and 2008 we held our True Blue Art Show and exhibition on the Mornington Peninsula where we showcased our members’ talents and varying art styles. We also offered free “paint it and take it” workshops for adults and children. Following its huge success we are making it an annual event.Since then we have exhibited at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show which has been a huge sucess. Click here for more details on this yearly event.

Meetings are held quarterly and workshops are held on a monthly basis on the 3rd Sunday of each month. Click on Calendar for upcoming events. Please contact us if you would like to come along to a meeting to have a look at what we do, have a coffee and join in the fun.

We look forward to sharing with you the joy of art and creativity.
